What are injectable fillers?
There is a large and ever-changing palate of injectable fillers available in the United States. Each filler has its own advantages and disadvantages, and Dr. Finn has extensive experience with each of them. Although some physicians use permanent fillers such as off-label silicone or Belafil, Dr. Finn feels the long-term risks of complications of these fillers is seldom justified. However, the state-of-the-art fillers – Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Belotero, Voluma and Sculptra can provide long term results with an excellent safety profile. The choice of filler depends on the goals and the site of injection. However, much more important than the choice of filler is the artistic vision and touch of the injector. At Finn Facial Plastics, rest assured, only Dr. Finn performs the injections.
What are the benefits of injectable fillers?
Facial aging begins with volume loss. As the balloon of the midface is depleted with loss of bone and fat of aging, the midface sags. An important part of natural rejuvenation is restoration of the youthful volume of the face. Dr. Finn can help restore your facial volume in a variety of ways. The simplest way is with off-the-shelf injectable fillers. Dr. Finn’s skill as a sculptor gives him a special advantage in shaping the face with volume restoration. Fillers can be used to fill in hollows under eyes, re-inflate cheeks, camouflage jowls, and strengthen bony structures such as chins or cheekbones. This has been described as a “liquid facelift”.
What is the recommended course of treatment and what are my options?
For patients with more volume loss, Sculptra may be a solution. With Sculptra, a solution of dissolvable crystals is injected under the skin stimulating the body to create its own collagen over several months. Several treatments may be necessary, and the process happens gradually so your friends will never know your secret! Some patients needing large-volume replacement will do better with fat transfer. In this procedure, fat is removed from areas of excess and re-injected where needed in the face. Fat transfer may require a couple of procedures for full correction, but the results can be permanent. Often volume replacement is a complement to surgical procedures such as facelift.
